2 contacts folders

In the list from Contacts that shows when I click the Address Book icon, I
see names, display names, email addresses, and distribution lists.

When I click on the Address Book icon on the toolbar, in the show names from
box, it says Contacts and my current list shows. If I click the down arrow
then right click on "Outlook Address book" to get the properties, it says
"No entries in this Address Book" and I get 2 error messages. One is
"Property dialog box could not be displayed. An attempt was made to open an
unsupported property." The next message has the same 1st sentence followed
by "Action could not be completed."

If I right-click on Contacts for the properties, the jGeneral tab says:
Information: Archive Folders and Contact folder: Contacts.

If I right-click the Address Book Folder (under Outlook today), it says the
location is Archive Folders. On the AutoArchive tab, "Do not archive items
in this folder" is checked.

If I right-click the Contacts Folder from the same list, it says: "Type:
Folder containing contact Items, Location Archive Folders, Description:
Contacts Comment".
The Outlook Address Book Tab says: "Show this folder as an email Address
Book. Name of AB: Contacts."

If I go to Tools, Options, Other, AutoArchive, it says it moves old items to
C:...\Microsoft\Outlook\archive.pst. Isn't that my Archive Folder?
I hope that helps.

Since then I've tried a bunch of things to correct the problem

3. If I open the Address Book folder in Outlook Today,

4. If I click on the Address Book icon in the Outlook

here that I find my 4 Distriubtion Lists. In the 'Show names
from' section, it shows Contacts. If I click on the down
arrow, it shows Outlook Address Book and under that it shows
Contacts.
5. There's no Mailing List subfolder associated with this
Contacts folder.

configure Outlook on this computer. somthing I did in the
transfer/ex-import established my dsl connection so I have no
problem sending/receiving email. It's just the contacts &
address book that are screwed up. Isn't there some way to fix
them?
I really appreciate any suggestions you may offer.

message A couple things seem very strange here.
Why would your Archive Folder be your root Outlook data file?
It should never be your default data file.
The Address Book does not show in Folder List. What is
"Address Book?" Did you create a Folder that you named Address
Book?
You'd better tell us how you created your profile and
specified your default Outlook Data File.

I'm not sure this will help but here goes:
Outlook Today-(Archive Folders)
-Address Book
-Calendar
+Contacts
-Mailing List
-Deleted Items
-Drafts
+Inbox...etc.

When I highlight Address Book, the from/subject box says
"There are no items to show in this view."

BUT when I click on the Address Book icon in the Toolbar, a
screen called Address Book comes up with names & email
addresses. In the "Show Names from the:" box, it says
"Contacts". If I click the down arrow, it says:
Outlook Address Book
Contacts (contacts is highlighted)
If I click highlight the Outlook Address Book, It says "No
entries in this Address Book".
To further confuse things, the names/addresses that appear
when Contacts is highlighted in this view, are not the same
as the ones in the Folder List Contacts.
I hope this helps.
Denise

message I'm even more confused.
Sorry. Your descriptions are just impossible for me to
follow.
Use the Folder List view to examine your entire Contacts
folder hierarchy. State what you see.
State which of these folders appear in your Outlook Address
Book.

I realize you think it couldn't be, but it was as I stated
it. Since then I've tried a bunch of things to correct the
problem and something must have worked - partially. 1. Now I
have a Contacts folder in Outlook Today with a sub-folder
called Mailing List.
2. Last week I created 4 Distribution Lists from Mailing
List but they are nowhere to be found in either folder.
3. If I open the Address Book folder in Outlook Today,
nothing shows up - it's blank.
4. If I click on the Address Book icon in the Outlook
toolbar, a list of names & email addresses appears and it
is here that I find my 4 Distriubtion Lists. In the 'Show
names from' section, it shows Contacts. If I click on the
down arrow, it shows Outlook Address Book and under that it
shows Contacts.
5. There's no Mailing List subfolder associated with this
Contacts folder.
Now, I'm so confused and I've tried so many things to get
this working that I can't remember everything. All I want
is for my stuff to be in one place where I can get to it.
Please help me resolve this if you can. Many thanks in
advance,
Denise
message Your description, if accurate, defies reality. If you have
two or more Contacts Folders listed under your Outlook
Address Book, then that dialog box could not be blank.
Re read what I posted. State your problem more clearly and
post back with a more accurate description of what you are
seeing.

Win XP with Office XP, using Outlook for email. I seem
to have 2 Contacts folders but only 1 shows up on the
folder list. When I try to open it, I get a message
saying it cannot be displayed because the folder could
not be opened. Then the address book window opens and
if I click the down arrow next to "Contacts", a second
Contacts folder appears. If I click on that one, no
problem, it opens and I can access everything. If I try
to delete the first Contacts folder, I can't. But under
the Folders list I see only 1 Contacts folder - the one
I can't open. Can anyone help?

Still inexplicable since the Outlook Address Book cannot contain anything
that is not in a Contacts Folder.
Just remove and re-add the Outlook Address Book from your profile to reset
your connections. That won't risk losing any data. Make sure you restart
Outlook in between.

Wow. 6.
First and foremost remember how you found these files because this
"invisible" data has to be in one of them.
Next you're going to create a new Outlook profile from scratch and set it to
use the same Outlook data file as its default that you are currently using
as your default. You will need all the information on how to configure your
mail accounts because you will need to recreate them when you create the new
profile.
Follow the directions here:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/287072

After you're done, your Outlook Address Book should display your Contacts
Folder correctly. If you think you have any missing Contact data you can
open each of these other files with Outlook's File > Open command to see if
they contain anything you think you are missing. Note that files marked
archive.pst will not contain any Contacts since Contacts are not archived.

First and foremost remember how you found these files because this

It does seem that way, although I've never seen such a thing as a

Don't worry. No data has been lost. We're just drilling down to your
configuration problems.
I need you to do two things:
1. Can you tell me the steps you used to designate the default
Outlook Data File in this new profile and which file it is?
2. Can you find the Inbox Repair Tool (scanpst.exe) and run it on
this file? (make sure Outlook is closed first).

I think I have a black cloud following me around. I did as you said.
Now I have in my Outlook Today a set of Archive Folders (includes
current emails & contacts) and a set of Personal Folders with the
same folders but no data in them. Also, the address book icon shows
Outlook Address Book, Contacts and everything is empty. How do I
transfer the folders from Archive Folders to Personal Folders? What
happened to my address book data (that was most current)?
Denise
Wow. 6.
First and foremost remember how you found these files because this
"invisible" data has to be in one of them.
Next you're going to create a new Outlook profile from scratch and
set it to use the same Outlook data file as its default that you
are currently using as your default. You will need all the
information on how to configure your mail accounts because you will
need to recreate them when you create the new profile.
Follow the directions here:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/287072

After you're done, your Outlook Address Book should display your
Contacts Folder correctly. If you think you have any missing
Contact data you can open each of these other files with Outlook's
File > Open command to see if they contain anything you think you
are missing. Note that files marked archive.pst will not contain
any Contacts since Contacts are not archived.

Six files turned up. Here's what the search shows:

archive.pst C:\DocumentsandSettings\DeniseTackett\Desktop\
backup.pst " " " "
"
outlook.pst " " " " "

archive.pst
C:\DocumentsandSettings\DeniseTackett\LocalSettings\ApplicationData\Microsoft\Outlook
backup.pst " " "

Outlook.pst " " "
" " " "

OK now what?
Denise

It does seem that way, although I've never seen such a thing as a
"hidden" folder in Outlook. But I've never seen the default data
file marked "Archive" either, so something odd happened here.
I'm reluctant just to have you create a new profile until we're
sure where all your data is. Try this. Make sure you have enabled
searching of hidden files and folders, then search your hard
drive for *.pst and see what turns up.

OK. I did as you asked and when I re-added the Outlook Address
Book, I wound up with the same dilemna as I had before. I was
sure to exit and restart Outlook as directed. It seems as if
there is a second Contacts folder that I can't see.

contain anything that is not in a Contacts Folder.
Just remove and re-add the Outlook Address Book from your
profile to reset your connections. That won't risk losing any
data. Make sure you restart Outlook in between.

In the list from Contacts that shows when I click the
Address Book icon, I see names, display names, email
addresses, and distribution lists.

When I click on the Address Book icon on the toolbar, in the
show names from box, it says Contacts and my current list
shows. If I click the down arrow then right click on
"Outlook Address book" to get the properties, it says "No
entries in this Address Book" and I get 2 error messages.
One is "Property dialog box could not be displayed. An
attempt was made to open an unsupported property." The next
message has the same 1st sentence followed by "Action could
not be completed."

If I right-click on Contacts for the properties, the
jGeneral tab says: Information: Archive Folders and Contact
folder: Contacts.

If I right-click the Address Book Folder (under Outlook
today), it says the location is Archive Folders. On the
AutoArchive tab, "Do not archive items in this folder" is
checked.

If I right-click the Contacts Folder from the same list, it
says: "Type: Folder containing contact Items, Location
Archive Folders, Description: Contacts Comment".
The Outlook Address Book Tab says: "Show this folder as an
email Address Book. Name of AB: Contacts."

If I go to Tools, Options, Other, AutoArchive, it says it
moves old items to C:...\Microsoft\Outlook\archive.pst.
Isn't that my Archive Folder?
I hope that helps.

I'm having somewhat of a similar problem. I keep trying to add a new account
and once I have completed this process i'll go back and check the e-mail
account box (the one that shows all the outlook accounts)and it will be
blank. If I can add a new e-mail account and it shows the process was
successful i cannot access the account because it denies my user name and
password. I know i'm doing it right because I set up my e-mail account
