Abandon Work

Our group recently converted to MS Project Server 2003. In our new
environment, the project manager can not adjust actuals. The question I have
is how does a project manager go about "abandoning work" that will not be
done? The plan I'm working on has been baselined, is active and has actual
time posted against it. I thought he appropriate approach would be to zero
out the Units for each resource assigned to the given task. This does adjust
the remaining hours to zero. The % Work Complete shows 100%, but the %
(Duration) Complete shows < 100%. I can not change the % Complete value to
100% or I get an error indicating my project plan and timesheets are out of
sync. Without changing the % Complete to 100%, the task will not close out
and I don't get credit for the work (from an earned value metrics
perspective).

Hi Jeff,

I am not familiar with Project Server and therefore can't determine
whether the following will work with your setup. Try asking the PM to
set the remaining duration to zero. This should set the % complete
(which is a duration measure) to 100%.

I hope this helps. In the future, please post your questions about
Project Server and the workings with Project Professional to the Project
server newsgroup.

Unfortunately, changing the 'remaining duration' to zero still sets off the
error message that the project plan is out-of-sync with protected actuals.
It then resets the plan to be in sync with the timesheets...thus resetting
the value to its orginal state.

Hi Jeff,

As you are using Project Server, if you haven't already, try posting
your question to the Project Server newsgroup. Sorry I can't help any
further.

Unfortunately, if you change the 'remaining work' value, it'll set off the
error message 'project plan is out of sync with actuals' and you'll get a nag
message asking if you want to re-sync with actuals. You'll get this
everytime you save, open or close your plan until you do so.

Under MSPS2003, you can not change remaining work, % complete, actual finish
date or anything else that would be a related value to the timesheet.
