Access 97 AND Access 2000

Is there REALLY no way to be able to write to the same database using
EITHER Access 97 or Access 2000? I have a laptop with 97 and a
desktop with 2000. Up until now, I've been able to edit on either
machine as needed and just update the other with a thumb drive. Now I
have to choose? Could using "Export: help? There must be some way
around this dilemma. Right???

Access 2000 can happily use (e.g. read and write data) in Access 97
databases, though it can't make design changes (e.g. to tables, forms
and queries). Access 97 predates the Access 2000 database format and
can't use it.

If you split your database, you can have two versions of the front end,
in Access 97 and Access 2000 format. Each of these works perfectly with
with an Access 97-format back end.

Thanks so MUCH for your reply! The first time I tried to open my
Access 97 db in Access 2000 I was notified that I would have to convert
or I wouldn't be able to change any objects but I was determined to try
anyway and as it happened, one of my data fields was a record of the
path to each of my photos. When I changed computers, the path to My
"Documents" changed and became a considerably longer string so of
course the very first thing I tried to do was enlarge that field. Now
I see that the object was the field itself and NOT the data.

I know nothing about "splitting" a database so I'll need to do a bit of
research on that subject. Thanks to you, at least I know the term to
search for.
