Add character before outline number ??

Bonnie

Hello -
Thanks to all of the help on this forum, I am able to use Word numbering
successfully. I would like to be able to do something that I'm not sure if
possible -any help would be appreciated. I would like to add a character
before some of my Heading levels using outline numbering. For example:
1. Heading 1
1.1 Heading 2
1.1.1 Heading 3
T-1.1.1.1 Heading 4
T- 1.1.1.1.1 Heading 5
I have tried using the standard process for creating outline numbering
(setting up all levels within Heading 1), however when I add a T before
levels 4 and 5, Word wants to put a number before the T. I understand why it
wants to do that to have continuous numbering, but I'm wondering if there's
another way to add that T without having a number before it. TIA

I don't have any problem doing this, typing T- before the first 1 field in
the "Number format" box for Level 4 or Level 5.

I'm able to type it in, and it appears to work, however, the numbers don't
increment properly as I go from section to section. I'd love to know if they
incremented correctly for you.

Well, I hadn't tried it, but I just did, and it works as expected for me.

Here's what mine looks like when I format it to add a T in the Number Format
box. At level 4, it sequentially changes the first number of the heading
instead of the last number.

1. Good heading 1
text
1.1 Good heading 2
text
1.1.1 Good heading 3
text
1.1.2 Another good heading 3
text
T1.1.1.2 Good heading 4
text
T2.1.1.2 Bad heading 4
text
T3.1.1.2 Bad heading 4
and so on...

Any thoughts about what I might be doing wrong???

Thanks, Bonnie

Oops! That first heading 4 is bad, not good. Sheesh. What a mess. I think
I'm gonna have to give up.

You've got your fields mixed up in Level 4; you could probably fix them, but
usually it's easier just to start from scratch. Select Level 4 (remember to
go through Heading 1) and clear the "Number format" box entirely. Type T,
then select Level 1 from the "Previous level number" box. This will insert a
field. Type a period, then insert Level 2, period, Level 3, period, then
select 1, 2, 3 from the "Number style" box to add the number field for Level
4.
