All desktop icons are "word"

after trying to save a word document from email, i came
back to the desktop and found that all the desktop icons
are the word icon. even though the properties point to
the correct programs, each one opens to word. All the
program files from the start menu are also word icons
that open word even though the properties are correct.
i've tried to reestablish shortcuts, but get the same
thing...any techies out there with help? this is so
weird. thanks! sue

i also remember that the application titles included
the .lnk extension
