All graphics just disappeared!!??

C

Catt

Hi again,
All of a sudded my pictures and table borders, or any other line or box,
have disappeared from my publisher '02 documents. They are stil there
because they print fine but I cannot view them. I tried going to
View-pictures and clicked on "detailed display", "fast resize" and "hide" and
tried saving the document and reopening but no change. I rebooted just in
case but no change. How can I get them back?
Thanks
Catt

Hi Catt,

This is almost certainly a problem with your video driver.

By going to Display Properties > Settings > Advanced > Troubleshoot, and
dragging the Hardware Acceleration slider down three notches, you will be
able to disable Publisher from making the calls on the video driver that
cause this problem.

If this does fix your problem, it means that the problem does indeed lie
with the video driver. You can leave your computer running at this lower
hardware acceleration, but it may cause problems with other programs. It is
a better solution to try and find a driver update for your graphics card.
Normally, the latest drivers from the video card manufacturer will do the
trick, but ATI (and recently Intel and Dell) tend to be slower in perfecting
their drivers, so some newer ATI and Intel cards to not yet have drivers
available that do not exhibit this behaviour. The solution here is to nag
ATI/Intel/Dell for better drivers.

(Please note that even if your computer is brand new, you won't necessarily
have the latest drivers)

Thanks Ed but I did that. Radeon (ATI) had a diagnostic that tested my card
and it all seems well and updated. I'm going to try and adjust the slider
now and will check back.

C

Turning the slider down to lowest then next one up had no effect. I can open
other publisher documents with ease with no problems. But there are several
now that won't show the graphics. Should I try clicking those 'trust' boxes
that you and Mary Sauer were discussing back in February?
Thanks

So I copied the publisher documents on to a cd and installed them in my other
pc. Half of the documents cannot be viewed. By that I mean the pictures and
boxes on all tables will not show. So I think this puts a pin in the
"display" theory balloon because the docs are in another pc. From research
this appears like its not a rare thing and has happened to others. Hopefully
someone might have an answer for this.......

Catt,

Can you send the files to me? I have never had display problems with my
system. Let's find out whether it's the files or not.

If you want to take me up on my offer, send sample file(s) to jl dot paules
at gmail dot com.

M

Mary Sauer

Did you go to the ATI web site or did you use the diagnostic tool on your
computer? If it is the latter I would advise going to ATI.

Thanks for the offer. I started to send one section but then realized its
10.4 megs for 16 pages so I cancelled it. So should I send you just maybe
the first 4 pages?

Got the file. All of your graphics are showing up but you do need to run
Design Checker on this catalog. You have text hidden in overflow areas in
several (as in MANY) places, several graphics weren't scaled
proportionately. I don't think any of these will have caused your problem.
My suggestion would be to find a different video driver. I had some weird
glitches when I first got Pub 2002 (missing borders, etc). I updated my
video driver and everything's been fine since.

Thanks, I don't know about design checker so I'll check that out in Publisher.
Scaling graphics proportionately? It sounds like you might be referring to
something like "resample"? I'm familiar with that in Frontpage and Word but
have never seen it in Publisher. Can you explain further?
Now the video driver. I'm going to update it for sure just to take it out
of the equation but I kind of doubt it since the same thing happened when I
transferred the files to my laptop. The pictures did not show on the laptop
either.
Thanks

Scaled proportionately means that when the graphic was stretched to fit a
particular space, the height to width ration is not the same as the
original. Publisher picks up on that. This has nothing to do with the
resolution.

Try updating the video drivers in your laptop as well. It's a very common
issue. I was dumbfounded how quickly doing that corrected the glitches I had
when I first started using Pub 2002.

Got the file. All of your graphics are showing up but you do need to run
Design Checker on this catalog. You have text hidden in overflow areas in
several (as in MANY) places, several graphics weren't scaled
proportionately. I don't think any of these will have caused your
problem.
My suggestion would be to find a different video driver. I had some weird
glitches when I first got Pub 2002 (missing borders, etc). I updated my
video driver and everything's been fine since.

Hi Catt,

This is almost certainly a problem with your video driver.

By going to Display Properties > Settings > Advanced >
Troubleshoot,
and
dragging the Hardware Acceleration slider down three notches,
you
will
be
able to disable Publisher from making the calls on the video
driver
that
cause this problem.

If this does fix your problem, it means that the problem does
indeed
lie
with the video driver. You can leave your computer running at
this
lower
hardware acceleration, but it may cause problems with other
programs.
It
is
a better solution to try and find a driver update for your
graphics
card.
Normally, the latest drivers from the video card manufacturer
will
do
the
trick, but ATI (and recently Intel and Dell) tend to be slower
in
perfecting
their drivers, so some newer ATI and Intel cards to not yet have
drivers
available that do not exhibit this behaviour. The solution here
is
to
nag
ATI/Intel/Dell for better drivers.

(Please note that even if your computer is brand new, you won't
necessarily
have the latest drivers)

Hi again,
OK so I ran the Design checker and understand it. Never did before. Its a
good tool to tell you when you miss spilled over text. The pictures are
scaled as needed. The way you spoke the first time it sounded like the
program was going to have a problem if I didn't click on something like
"resample" . Front Page is like that. But I can see that rescaling a picture
is more of a warning from Pub than a potential problem creator. At least
thats the way I understand it now. I'll get my drivers updated today. I have
ATI radeon card in my desktop that has 2 megs of graphic power but I know the
driver is the key. Its kind of funny how you have to jump through hoops
before they tell you have to update your driver. Radeon is a good hardware
device but its a little silly that you must go beyond a simple registration
before you can view your update process and choices. These companies refuse
to make it simple and "cut and dry". If you own it then it should be a
simple "upgrade my driver" button.
