All was well for years, and now it's all gone to poop...

Version: 2008 Operating System: Mac OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard) Processor: Intel Email Client: pop Ha! it was all going so well...too well, and now everything is in the toilet. It all began with my funky way of syncing my laptop to my imac, which i have to several times a day here in Nepal, and when I noticed that all of sudden, instead of entourage reading off my external drive Identity folder, it was reading and writing to a backup drive (a close of the external).

So I figured what the heck, just delete the Microsoft Office Data folder on the backup, and Office would sort itself out on the next start. Wrong.

I now get the "There is no such disk error." So I figured uh oh, just copy the folders back to the backup and see what happens. Still, "There is no such disk error."

Okay I figure, just use the handy dandy Database repair tool, but that just blows up now on launch.

Then I though, perhaps I could use the office setup assistant to set up a new Identity, and use the backup later to replace it. Wrong agian.

Setup Assistant wont get past the first screen. U can just click continue until you get blue in the face, and feel solidarity with all the French and German MS haters out there.

So now I am forced to look through boxes of junk for the install CD, which frankly, I thought I would never need. Where the heck is the Repair install tool that I know windows had on the drive, back when I had to do that over and over again.

Well, I hope someone can suggest something that works at this point, or I think that I will join the growing EU Coalition Against All Things MS, and dump all of this MS stuff in the river...

Cheers,
Jigs

As one added clue that I suspect is the problem. Several months back I used a cleaner to get rid of any PPC code, as I have Rosetta installed and wanted a cleaner Snow Leopard system. I have not noticed any problems with any other apps since the cleaning, but perhaps Office 2008 is dependent on some of the PPC code that must have been tossed.

Once you modify Office, it will have problems updating. Do not do this!

Your funky way might be the crux of your problem. I'm going to list some
basics that might help you find a solution.

Office for Mac should be install in the root Application folder. Check this
file, Microsoft Component Plugin and make sure it's 12.2.3.

/Applications/Microsoft Office
2008/Office/MicrosoftComponentPlugin.framework

Moving the Entourage Identity to another drive is not recommended. If you do
this, you MUST understand exactly what you did and how it works.

If you switched from POP to IMAP you wouldn't have to worry with syncing
your two computers.

After installing Snow Leopard you must clear up fonts. See this article:
Microsoft Fonts to delete after installing Snow Leopard (includes help
deleting font caches)

<http://www.entourage.mvps.org/troubleshoot/remove_fonts_snowleopard.html>

Moving the Microsoft User Data folder should not have anything to do with
the applications launching. If you have to re-install and have one of the
original 2008 install CDs, you will need Rosetta. It's a small application
and will be needed for some time to come until all applications are
upgraded.

Hope this helps!

You haven't quite said it, but I suspect you moved your Microsoft User
Data (MUD) folder to an external drive and then replaced it with an
alias. Correct?

An Apple alias will always point to the original. You can't always
replace it with something else and expect it to work.

First, copy the entire MUD folder back to your Documents folder. Launch
Office and make sure everything works there. If that does work then move
your MUD to your external drive and create a new alias.

I personally don't sympathize with you if you're going to have this
attitude. Microsoft didn't cause your problem. You caused it with your
"funky way of syncing". We all make mistakes. At least put blame where
blame is due.
