Applying work contour changes work...why?

I set up a task to be fixed duration and NOT effort driven. I assigned
resources at 50% and 'saved' the change. I went back into the task and
applied a different work contour (default is 'flat') and my work
decreased...I don't understand why this happened. (I have no calendar
assigned to the task and I have not set up resource calendars)
