Attaching Excel Files

Chris

Dear All,

I’m trying to attach (embed) an Excel file into a MS project file, but not
linking it and not by inserting an object into the notes page. Is there a way
of doing this?

For a number of tasks I have a set of checklists in Excel. I would like (as
with the notes symbol in information column/field) to have an image that
informs me of the checklist in the Excel file and then when clicked takes me
to the embedded Excel file for completion.

I basically want to be able to transport all the files around but have
experienced issues with using links and embedding, which seems to open the
file in the notes page.

Best wishes
Chris

Hi Rod,

Thanks for that - I have to say I get bit nervous about using the hyperlink
functionality and confidence that over time when numerous changes have been
made ot the msp file that the links will remain there.

I assume the best way is to ensure the files being linked are clearly held
within a set area of folders for that project and then if one needs to 'pack
up' and take the project information with one to a non networked area for a
meeting (and potentially do updates) the whole lot can go and come back and
be updated.

Previous expereince has suggested that the links, when copying it all back
to the server folders can go a bit hay-wire. Very happy to hear of a better
method short of networking the whole of Worcestershire!

Cheers
Chris

You need to use relative links. Simplest is to store files in same folder as
project file. Hyperlinks are much safer than other ways. Most important is
to make sure users never rename files. If they want to take a copy for
backup, add a date code to the COPY not the master. The master file must
always keep the same file name and have version history written on the first
page, not in the file name!
