Automate Excel Charting in Word

Is it possible to automate Excel Charting in Word? Normally, if I want to
insert an Excel chart in Word, I just go Insert-->Object-->Microsoft Excel
Chart. You are then able to work with the chart right there. Is it possible
to manipulate this chart in VBA? Or is the only VBA solution to
create/manipulate the chart in Excel, then copy and paste it into Word?
