Calculating duration

How do I set MS Project to automatically calculate duration between two dates?

i.e. On a construction site I know which event will trigger the need for
security to be on site. I know which event will cause security to no longer
be required. I don't know how long (duration) I will require security on
site.
I have set the predecessor and I have set the successor, but I am currently
adding days until the interval is filled.

I believe what you are describing is a hammock task for the "security
task". See FAQ #19 "Hammock Tasks" at:
