Can I assign an alternative resource in Project 2003 Professional.

Is it possible to assign an alternative resource to a task so that Project
can chose which resource to use given the availablity of resources after
applying Resource Levelling?

For example, I have a task that either Dave or Mary can do, but I only need
one of them to carry it out. Normally, I would assign either one or the other
to the task but it would be useful if i could tell Project that either Dave
or Mary could be assigned the task, depending on assignments.

Welcome to this Microsoft Project newsgroup

No. Project only delays tasks when levelling, it cannot optimise. You
might do better to assign them as, say, developers, but you cannot then
assign by name - it's one or the other.
