Can I use an alternate upgrade?

Can you upgrade office with a different suite than originally installed or do
they have to have the same name?

Example 1: current installation office ultimate - Can I use office small
business upgrade and thereby upgrade only the programs in small business and
maintain the older version of the other ultimate programs?

Example 2: current install office standard - Can I use the office pro
upgrade thereby adding additional programs to my installation?

You can't use upgrade versions as a qualifying product.

I think Tom misread your post or I am.

You must be upgrading to Office 2007 to do any kind of save version upgrade
(2007 SBE to 2007 Basic) because 2003 Pro to 2003 SBE or earlier as a
qualifier won't work. It wasn't until Office 2007 that Microsoft allows the
same "year product" to upgrade itself.

The way I read it is that you want to install some newer programs, like Word
2007, but leave other older programs like Excel 2003 on the computer. The
answer to that question is yes but you must be careful. If you use Outlook
you will have an issue if you use a different version of Outlook and Word.

To do this you start the upgrade and ensure that it is a custom install.
You select the programs that you want to overwrite during the installation.

Example 2. Yes with the same qualifications.

Let us know if this answered your questions.

Your answer sort of helped. What I am looking at is purchasing Office
Ultimate '07 (b/c I can get it for the same price as any other version right
now) but I only want to purchase it if later I can buy the upgrade to say
2010 standard. Thereby giving me the standard programs in 2010 and the other
ultimate programs would still be available as '07. Is this allowed?

Should be but since Microsoft has not issued, to my knowledge, any details
on what will work as an upgrade qualifier for Office 2010, there is no hard
and fast answer to the last question.
