Hello. I have Office Professional 2003. When I first open Excel, Word, etc.
their is a task pane that opens up on the right side of the page. However,
when I open up an existing file(s) the task pane disappears. I've figured
out that if I go into tools>customize>toolbars tab and click on "task pane"
it reappears, however, its a tedious process. It would be nice to have the
task pane present permanently or atleast have a small icon in the toolbars so
I can click on it when I need to use it. Please describe in detail both ways
if possible. thank you in advance. Rochelle.

In Excel:
Tools>Options>View tab>check the "show task pane at startup".

Not sure if you have to do this in each application like Word, etc.

Yes, you need to do this with each application: Word, PPT, Access, from
what I have experienced today.

Hello Garfield - Thank you for that MVP document...it was very helpful. I
think for now I won't download the file the document talks about. But I will
take their suggestion of going to view>taskpane versus the way I indicated in
my original request. Thank you...maybe there will be an update for Office
2003 that will fix this.

Hello L - Thank you for your suggestion. However, your suggestion only works
when you first open Excel, Word, etc. Unfortunately, when I try to open an
existing file the task pane disappears and I was hoping their was a way that
the task pane would permanentely stay. Actually, "garfield" provided a
document that explains that a file needs to be downloaded in order for the
task pane to stay on permanently. Thank you for your help ..have a great day!

Sorry, I wasn't much help.

I learned something, however.

Hi Rochelle,

You can also use the shortcut key of Shft+F1 in
Word 2003 to pop the TaskPane up when it's not visible :)
(Ctrl+F1 toggles it on and off)

As you've found the Tools=>Customize menu,
if you want it as a toolbar button you can select
the 'Commands' tab and there, the 'view' item
in the left pane there and select
the TaskPane choice in the right list and drag
that item to the toolbar location of your choice.
