Can this computer do Office2kPro?

Ed

I found myself downgrading my computer - my other one died and this one was
free! It's a Compaq Deskpro 2000, 133MHz, 32mb RAM. Do you think it can
handle Office 2000 Pro?

With that little RAM, you won't even get Win2K or WinXP working (worth a
hoot, if at all). Minimum 256MB for any kind of efficiency. At 133MHz
basic word procressing will be comfortable, modest spreadsheets ok, but
you'll probably get bored waiting for any really large documents to do
anything.

I'd look for a more up to date backup machine than that - it's not really
worth putting money into to bring it up to usefulness.

This is not the group for hardware issues, but maybe somebody could help you
fix your regular computer.. you are going to seriously struggle with the
free one..

Ed, I gotta agree with the others. Even though it meets the specs for
running Office 2000, it's really not going to be an enjoyable experience for
you.

If it tells you anything, I bought my first computer in 1995 or 1996, and it
was a 133MHz with 32MB RAM and a 2G hard drive. I ran Windows 95 and Office
97 on it. I know I added more RAM almost immediately. I had to buy two RAM
chips because they had to be installed in matching pairs. (You may run into
that kind of thing.)

That was 10 years ago, Ed. I know it was free, but this system you've got is
seriously out of date.

I was given a free laptop by my manicurist. It is a Pentium MMX (200 MHz)
with 64 MB RAM. It runs Office XP Pro. It ain't fast and it definitely ain't
pretty - but it works. And scored me some brownie points at work last week
when I needed to be working on the policy manual and didn't have a company
computer to use for two days.

Ed - I'd say go for it. It's a nothing ventured, nothing gained situation.
But Echo's right - time to upgrade.

.... except that now the policy manual is not so good for speed readers.. :)

Hey, in that case, go for it! (But I still think Ed'll want to add more
RAM.)

Oh yeah - but I wouldn't spend the money for it. Not on a computer that old.
I won't spend any on this laptop. Not worth it.

I still have an old box P1 100mhz with 64mb RAM. It has W2K Pro and Office 2000 Premium on it. It runs but it runs a wee bit very very slow. I only have that for my young kids. It is still good enough for them. I would not suggest that you use the one you described because although it will run but you will not have a good experience with it. Time to Upgrade
