cannot insert building block in unprotected section

Hi everyone,

Word 2007:
For one of my customers I have created a gallery of building blocks in the
ribbon, with which users can select different ways to finish a letter. This
works fine in normal documents.
However, the document type in which the blocks will be used most of the
time, appears to have a section that is protected for form fields. Even
though the building block will be inserted in the other, unprotected section,
the button on the ribbon remains grey and unavailable.

Is there a way to have my gallery available again when the user places the
cursor in an unproteced section?

Thank you,
Cooz

Many settings are disabled in a protected document, even for unprotected
sections. I believe it would be possible to use a macro that unprotects the
document, inserts the building block and then reprotects the file. You
should ask about this in a programming newsgroup such as
microsoft.public.word.vba.general.

Hi Stefan,

Yes, I can write this macro myself. The trouble is that my users cannot use
the gallery - unless I bother them with an additional button that they have
to click first to make the gallery available :-(. But then it is not possible
to switch the protection automatically back on at the right moment. Doesn't
work.

It would have made some sense if in Word 2003 it wouldn't have been possible
to insert AutoText in an unprotected section as well - but that is something
that works flawlessly. This is one step back.

I guess I'll have to trade in my gallery for plain buttons that display
userforms that handle everything. So 2003...

Thank you for replying,
Cooz

Protection for form fields is rarely a good approach for documents that
require free editing. It is best suited to forms used for gathering data.
Rather than use protected form fields, you might consider instead offering a
userform to collect the data that is in the protected section and insert it
into the document using docvariable fields and remove the protection for
form fields altogether?
