Cannot open saved office documents

I have Office 2003 Professional edition. When I try to open up any previously
saved office documents, the progran stops responding. I cannot open up
documents on my hard drive or any network drives. I've been able to open up
docs on network drives through other machines. I can start a new document,
but once saved it will not open up again and the program stops responding.
When I open up the task manager to close the program, it shows two instances
of the program and takes about 2-3mins to close down both.
Any help is appreciated.

Right-click on the My Computer icon on the Windows desktop,
left-click on Disconnect Network Drive, and disconnect any mapped
drives that are not currently available.
