Cannot update Publisher 2000 deluxe, even manually

I have tried to update Publisher 2000 after installing, uninstalling, and
reinstalling. Neither the office update site nor the manual download file
will work. The office update does update Word 2000, part of Works Suite
2001. I have even uninstalled Works and reinstalled Publisher 2000 by itself
and it is not recognized. The manual download update tells me that the
update has already been installed when Word is present (and already updated),
and tells me that the expected version of Office component is not present
when Publisher is installed by itself. Any ideas?

I am not having any Publisher 2000 installation errors. Publisher 200o
installs and runs fine. It just won't update via Office Updates or the
manual download update.

Yes, I am trying to update Publisher 2000 from SR1 to SP3. I had to install
it on a new computer because the old one completely died, but I cannot get it
to update. There was a trial version of Office 2003 preinstalled on the new
computer, but I uninstalled that and used the manual cleanup instructions to
delete all traces of it so that I could install Works Suite 2001 which gives
me Word 2000. Word 2000 updated just fine to SP3 from Office Updates site.
When I try to update manually, I get the error that the SP3 is already there
when Word 2000 has been updated, and I get the error that the expected
version of Office is not present when Word is not installed. As you can see
I've tried virtually every combination I can think of, but Publisher 2000
just will not update even when installed by itself.

Yes, indeed, I used the Windows Installer Cleanup utility, and I manually
removed all traces of Office components from the registry and I removed all
files and folders, as the manual cleanup instructions say to do. This is
what enabled me to install Works Suite 2001. I could not install Word 2000
from Works Suite 2001 before doing this. It loads and runs properly now.
Publisher 2000 loads and runs. It just will not update.

Sorry, but I forgot to tell you that I do not get any of the errors that are
in the article you recommended.

I have tried that, but no luck. Of course, Publisher will not update from
the manual download either.

Have you emptied your cache, maybe there isn't room in your temp folder for the
download. In Internet Explorer, tools, Internet Options, delete files.
I don't know what else I can do to help. Can you use Publisher?

I have IE set up to delete temp files upon closing. Publisher is running OK.
I just cannot update it.

You might look at the temporary file settings and see what is there. If nothing else
delete all references (cookies too) to Microsoft update, this maybe a solution.
