Can't change external dependency

I have a master schedule with multiple (6) inserted schedules. Between these
schedules I have several external dependencies defined - one example being a
dependency in the Test schedule that says that test shouldn't start until
Engineering is complete (a task in another schedule). This is largely
working but I have one specific external dependency that doesn't work.

In my master schedule I create an external depenency in one sub project to a
task in another sub project and then when I hit OK it recognizes that it is
a valid external dependency but doesn't update the Start Date to reflect the
completion of the External Dependancy (Note that I have my Contsraint Type
set to As Soon as Possible so that shouldn't affect things)

Added to this 2 other things are strange:

1) When I edit the task and try and change the dependency it won't let me.
The box isn't greyed out but I can't make any changes to it (I can't even
delete it)

2) A task number abobe this seems to be missing. I have Task 21 which is a
summary task and then Task 23 which is the task I am having problems with
but no Task 22.

Any ideas on whether I am doing something wrong?

Thanks

Dave

Some more info on this:

1) When I open the individual sub project on it's own the dates are correct,
i.e. the link to the external dependency seems to have worked. It just
doesn't work in the master project (where I need it to)

2) When I put my cursor over the start of the task that appears to be wrong
in the gantt chart window in the Master schedule it shows as being 'split'
with an apparent gap of about a week depicted by a grey dotted line. I don't
understand what this means.
