Can't change paragraph format in first line of text in Slide Maste

In PowerPoint 2007, I am working in my Slide Master. The first line of text
in the text box in the Slide Master is formatted with a hanging indent and
space before and after. I can't change the value for paragraph indent or the
space before/after. They can be changed in the UI - not like options are
greyed out or anything - but the changes don't take effect.

I can change the level 2 or level 3 indent paragraphs in any way. This only
affects the level 1 paragraph. Also, I can change the font (size, bold,
etc.) of the level 1 paragraph ... this seems to only affect paragraph-level
formatting.
