Can't input unicode characters in Word X

There are a large number of characters (both for foreign
languages and for scientific and linguistic notation) in
unicode that I am in need of for various documents I am
writing and translating. However, I cannot input them in
MS Word X no matter what I try (I've checked my font
settings and every other setting I could think of, but no
dice).

Is there no way to do this? I'm baffled as to why Word X
would not be able to handle these characters. They work in
the other OS X compatible applications I've tried.

The problem is that WOrd X does not support Unicode characters... Maybe
in a future release... Who knows :-\
