Can't open files in Office 2000-Word or Excell

All of the sudden I'm unable to open files in Word or Excel. When I go to
File/Open and then try to open any folder Word locks up. The same thing
happens in Excel also. I have to ctl/alt/del and end task to get anything
to work again. I have run the detect and repair utility and it doesn't
correct the problem. I also downloaded the current updates and still no
success.

Any ideas?
