Can't see object when dragging or resizing

When I move (drag) or resize an object or group of objects, the only thing I
see is an outline of the object during the move process. I would like to be
able to see the object itself during the move or resize.

For example, if I group several boxes together so they overlap and then try
to move the group, I cannot see the objects until I release my mouse button.
That makes it hard to see exactly where I'm going to put the group.

This was not the default behavior in previous versions of Visio. Is there a
setting that I can change to enable the viewing of the object during a move
or resize?

Thank you very much.

In a post about a month ago, someone asked this question ("How do I re-enable
preview of objects being dragged"). The answer was that the preview was
dynamically turned on and off based on performance and resources available to
Visio. Unfortunately, this doesn't make sense based on my experience.

I run Visio 2003 on two laptops. The older one has a P4-733MHz CPU and
512MB of memory. I always get previews when I move an object regardless of
how complex the object is. On my newer laptop, a P4-2.0GHz PC with 1GB of
memory, I never get previews, no matter how simple the object or what else I
have running. Based on this, it doesn't seem like performance is the factor.

Is there a setting somewhere that enables or disables this? If not, is
there a way to "prioritize" Visio so I get the previews?

Thanks so much!

just as a curiousity, what is in the system properties => advanced =>
performance options? could it be that it was turned off at the system level?

I thought of that. Both processor scheduling and memory usage are optimized
for programs (not services or cache). I defragged and even reduced the
number of running processes while using Visio but with no luck.

I have experienced the same issue with a newer computer being unable to
generate live drag images while older computers can. We investigated this
in depth and found that Visio uses a custom image drawing and masking
procedure to create these drag images. (The code was written well before
modern video cards standardized on the optimum way to accomplish this.)

Basically different video cards and drivers handle this non-standard way of
doing things in different ways. Some have optimized this set of
instructions and some have not. Thus there is a lot of machine to machine
variance, and processor speed is no longer much of a factor.

I'm happy to report that we have thrown out the old code and delegated this
work to the video card for the upcoming Visio 12. This resulted in a near
seamless drag image on our test machines that had exhibited the poor
behavior previously.

chuck I.

I am having this problem now, after updating to a newer computer. This will
now make my job of drawing my designs imposiible, as I cannot see anything
until I release the grabbed image. I do not see my company moving to release
12 anytime soon. Has anything been found/created sinse the last post to fix??

Reduce the level of hardware acceleration for your video driver.
