Can't send email, can't use office update

Peter

I can recieve but not send email using Office 2003. I am also unable to
access "office update" any more.
Repairing Office does not help.
Removing and reinstalling Office does not help.
Is there some residual software which remains when Office is removed? If
so, how do I get rid of it?
Any suggestions? It's a real nuisance moving to another computer when it is
time to send or reply to an email.

Error messages? Did you use "test account settings" successfully?
Authentication set up properly?

Post all replies to the group to keep the discussion intact. Due to
the (insert latest virus name here) virus, all mail sent to my personal
account will be deleted without reading.

After furious head scratching, Peter asked:

Thanks Milly.

The messages were usually "server failed to respond" or similar.
I have the email working again but am not confident that it will keep
working. My ISP uses an ssl connection which means that email scanning must
be turned off in Norton Antivirus. I had it turned off but could not send
any emails. I turned scanning on and then off again and, for now at least,
the problem is gone.

The other problem, unable to use Office update, still remains. I have
followed all the steps (twice) in KB 304498 but the problem remains.
Any suggestions? Where can I find ActiveX controls to try a reinstall?
