How do you link a caption sequence number to a word in a
sentance. For example, I have a picture with a caption
and in the paragraph describing the picture I want to
say "see Figure 12". If I have to change/update the
caption number under the picture I want the "see Figure
12" to change also, so that the numbers match.

Chris,

after you've inserted your caption for the picture, you
must insert a cross-reference within a paragraph to
reference it. To insert a cross-reference to a Figure,
click...

Insert | Cross-reference: select Figure from Reference
type, pick the type of reference you want, in this case
pick Only label and number, select the figure from the For
which caption dialog, and click Insert.
