Clicking an Excel spreadsheet opens Excel, but then it stops in Re

Starting last week, clocking on an Excel spreadsheet only opens Excel. It
stops in READY. I must drag the Excel spreadsheet icon in the opened
workarea for the spreadsheet to continue to open. What did I do wrong?

The same happens with Word documents.
