client fizzles after 4 seconds

First some context: I have a PowerPC G4 with dual 1G processors and
1G RAM running 10.3 Panther. Office X (including Entourage) works
fine. A new client of mine is a large company and uses their
corporate Exchange server a lot, including mail, calendars,
directories, and Public Folders.

I am running a Cisco VPN client to access their internal LAN. I have
successfully configured Entourage to work with their server for mail
and calendar, but, as we all know, Public Folders are unreachable and
that is the crux of my work, hence my foray into Outlook 2001. I have
Virtual PC 6.1, but Outlook on it is too slow to get any real work
done.

So, I installed OL 2001 on my MAC, and fired it up. It, of course,
starts up OS 9.2.2 since it must run on it, and allowed me to set up
the server addresses et al. It even got all of my mail and other
folder info from the Exchange server.

But after showing my page with all of the correct data for a few
seconds, it just quits. OS 9 keeps going, but subsequent attempts to
restart the app go nowhere: the OL 2001 splash screen hangs for about
a minute, then it blinks out, sometimes with an error message about
the client losing contact with the server.

Any ideas? I hate the idea of setting up a separate PC for this
likely-to-be long-lived work.

Thanks,

John

OK. I have spent quality time with Control Panels\Outlook Settings in
OS9. It shows my Exchange server and my personal email in blue and
underlined.

But when I start OL 2001, it shows the flash screen, hangs there for a
minute, and gives an error message "The client operation failed". It
then either shows my main screen for a few seconds and dies, or just
dies.

Anyone know what this error message means?

Thanks,

John
