One of my documents on word 2008 has randomly been converted to compatibility mode. I can open new blank word documentsbut the compatibility mode doc will not let me close word or save or anything. I am wondering how to close the document as it continues to stay present on my main screen. Thanks

"Compatibility Mode" simply means that you have saved the file in the old
binary format (.doc).

When you attempt to save a 2008 XML document into the old binary format,
sometimes Word strikes an object it cannot convert and hangs.

I suspect that's what has happened to you. The compatibility mode document
is in fact a hung process. Simply force-quit it and it will go away.

You didn't mention your OS or Word update level, so I can't offer anything
more.

Hope this helps

Adding to John's comment: You may not even have to Force Quit if you can get
into the Save As dialog. Just make sure to change the file type to the top
Word Document choice & see if you can save that. You can also try
Command+(period) to stop the current save process if necessary - may/may not
work.
