% Complete field

Is the % Complete field always tied to duration of project? My PM's are
wanting %complete to represent actual work completed, not time. Is there a
way to do this? Example being that we may be 50% of the way through the
project but actual work completed may only be 35%, and this is what they want
represented. Does the actual % Complete change from day to day because you
are one day closer to the end date? Can this field be linked to something
other then start and finish date?

Many people have strong opinions on this topic, I'm one of them.
%Complete marks with time, it's useless.
%Work Complete is somewhat better.

The best way, IMHO, is to use Physical%Complete. Physical%Complete marries
perfectly with the work/cost distributions in your Baseline and tracks your
Earned Value perfectly. Using Physical%Complete properly will match your
schedule exactly. The key is to have quantifiable rules for taking the
correct percentage. For example, using the Update as Scheduled features on
the tracking toolbar is not going to give you anything useful.

If you would like more information, I think I have a while paper or some
PowerPoint slides on it. I can be reached at jeaksel (at) yahoo (dot) com

What you are looking for is Physical % Complete. Replace [Duration]%
Complete with that, and you'll have what you want.

Hope this helps in your world.

Hi Jim,

I can't agree with you, that best way is to use Physical%Complete. What
about reports? Task with Physical%Complete = 100% will be never reported as
Completed. Only tasks with %Completed=100% are reported as completed.
MSP missing functionality for correct and full finish of task without
recalculating or losing important information (for example - actual work is
lost - recalculating to work after completing task with actual work different
from planned work).
