Conditional tasks?

M

MIchel Khennafi

Good morning to all,

I have a MS Project file that contains 1 task that will condition other
tasks to be done or not...

For instance after a task is accomplished, based on the results I could do
nothing or trigger a set of tasks.

How do you do this in project? I could list all the tasks whatever the
originating task result is. Is there a way to have tasks that have a
duration of 0 and a effort of 0 without me selecting the tasks nd changing
work and duration and resources?

Have a good day

Hi Michel,

I'm afraid you'll have to do that manually.

Michel,
First of all Project will not do the type of conditional scheduling you
desire - it just isn't that "smart". Oh, it probably could be done with
some VBA, but my guess is the effort to develop the necessary algorithm
is greater than simply doing what should be part of your job as a
project manager (i.e. develop and maintain the plan).

I suggest one of two choices. Either enter all the possible tasks that
could result from the trigger task and then link the valid ones as
appropriate when the results are in (delete the others), or just wait on
the results before entering the second "phase" tasks.

Just for reference, a task with 0 in the Duration field is by definition
a milestone. Milestones should never have work associated with them,
otherwise they are not really "milestones". On the other hand, it may be
quite common to have a non-zero duration task with no resources assigned
(e.g. a future planning package). In that case the task has duration but
no work.

Hope this helps.
