Convert Word file (with linked references) to PDF

I have a Word file that I'm trying to convert to PDF (using Acrobat 6
Professional) and some of the linked references are changing into Error
messages. Does anyone have any experience in this problem? I've been using
various versions of Acrobat for years now and never experienced this problem
before.
