Corrupt connection to data file

T

TonyR

See below for my original post and a reply, here are some more details.

I installed Optlook 2003 on my new PC then copied my Outlook.pst file from
my old machine to the new machine and that resulted in 2 Personal Folders
appearing.
I don't recall now exactly how but I managed to get rid of one of them and
Outlook uses the other one (copied from old PC) just fine until I try to
access the Advanced Options for the folder so I can compress the data file.

By "Second Mail Folder" I mean that I have a Personal Folders where I have
all my personal emails and I also have a Work Related folder for all my work
emails. I have some rules setup to move emails to my Work folder. I have no
problems compressing this data file.

Any advice on fixing my problem would be welcone.

Thanks,
Tony

From your incomplete description, you appear to be trying to access an
Outlook data file that has a corrupt connection to your profile. Only you
could know how you corrupted this profile. Tell us the rest of the story.

So what exactly happens when you try to compress?

have you tried making a new profile and adding the old pst to it as the
default delivery location at the time you create the profile?

I never get that far as the error about "operation failed" appears when I
click on the "advanced" button which is one step before the compress.

For the time being, using the mail applet in control panel (with OL closed)
create a new data file and designate it the default.
Does OL then function correctly?

I did that and it setup the new data file correctly and I made it the
default and it can be compressed.

I tried to copy the stuff from the old data file to the new one but it will
not copy things like Inbox, Calendar, Contacts etc. Is there a way to copy
them to the new data file?

You dont want to copy the default folders, only the data within them.
Within OL File>Open>Data File......browse to 'old pst'
Then copy a batch of data at a time, and test your 'new' data file before
copying some more
(It may be that something/data in the old file is corrupt)

Thanks I have copied all my emails and contacts to the new data file.
I can't seem to copy my calendar items but There are not that many setup for
2007 so I'll just reenter them.

Now I'm faced with trying to close the old file so I can delete it. However,
when I try to close it I'm getting the message "Operation failed. An object
could not be found". Any ideas?

I must add thanks for all your help!

With Outlook closed, use Control Panel's Mail applet to remove the PST from
the mail profile.

Thanks I have everything copied now but using the Control Panel Mail applet
to remove the old data file will not work since it does not appear when I
start the applet.

I'm at the point where it might be easiest to remove Outlook from my PC,
reinstall to get a clean install then copy the mail, calendar etc. from a
backup .PST into the newly installed Outlook dat file. I'm thinking this
might be the best way to move forward.

Uninstalling and reinstalling rarely solve Outlook problems. Just start
with a new mail profile.
