critical path not calculating

I have a project in 2003 that shows no critical path
I recreated that project in 2002 and it shows the critical path just fine

I thought that perhaps the project was messed up in 2003 so what I did was
recreate the project with all the default settings.

First I created the task list (50) tasks - the critical path looked okay BUT
periodically I would get an activex error and have to quit out and come back
into project. But some of the dates looked wrong (i.e. the last task was set
at 2 days but had a start date of 3/30/05 and a finish date of 7/28/06 -
HUH!!)

After getting my tasks set up (with the one strange date problem) I then
added main tasks and made my other tasks subtasks so that this was easier to
summarize. Like so....

MAIN TASK 1
subtask 1
subtask 2
subtask 3
MAIN TASK 2
subtask 1
subtask 2
etc.

As soon as I did this the critical path go all messed up - when I did the
same thing in project 2002 there were no issues at all.

I installed service pack 2 for 2003 (which has an activex fix in it) and now
the dates look right (albeit 2 months different from the original file) but
the critical path still won't calculate.

Can anyone help me with this please? Am I doing something wrong?

If you have any of the Main Task with logic ties this could be one problem.
Have you gone to Tools>Options and set your Critical If Less Than?
Do all your task have a successor?
