cross-references headings

When I attempt to do a cross-reference, I notice that all of my specified
headings are not there. I go to the article where it says "troubleshoot
cross-references" and indeed, they mention a solution of classifying the
heading as a style. But, there isn't any other way to classify a heading
outside of setting it as a sytyle within the "styles and formats" toolbar.
Why aren't all of my headings being shown when my headings have been
classified in the "styles and formats" toolbar as instructed?

What styles did you use to mark your headings?

Jezebel thank you for responding. Indeed under the "style and formatting"
toolbar, I'm using a plain jane Heading, 1,2 and 3 scheme.
