database daemon error - multiple regular recurrences

I

incogenator

greetings group. this is my first time posting a new post on this group
so i consider this to be pretty baffling as a problem. i usually am
able to troubleshoot most of my own software problems myself.

the problem:
- entourage (latest version - 2004 v11.3.2 - 061213) starts and
connects to my MS exchange server-based mailbox with no problems.
- i leave entourage on and go about my work and come back in about an
hour or so and find that i have an error window saying that "Entourage
Database Dameon has encountered an error and needs to close".
- important note (i think): these errors always come in PAIRS meaning i
get two of the same exact error windows at the same time notifying me
of the error and saying that they need to close.
- as soon as i click 'send' or 'don't send' (the report to MS), it
shuts down completely and RESTARTS entourage and i can continue on
without a hitch until it comes up again. no data seems to have been
lost but i can't be completely sure. i love exchange server for times
like this because whatever happens to my local data/machine, everything
is ok with my mailbox.
- im not sure if there is any corruption or otherwise going on as a
result of these frequent errors.

some background and fixes i have tried:
- i had moved my MS user data files to another location (away from the
'documents' folder) based on a how-to i read online. i think i put it
in the library/application support folder as some other users had done
with no problems. i also checked later to see if this was ok to do and
found that there was a MS support article somewhere on microsoft.com
that said this could be done and i could move the 'user data' folder
anywhere AS LONG as i put an alias in its place in the 'documents'
folder. i went ahead and did that (more here:
http://www.microsoft.com/mac/resour...icle=/mac/officex/ork/Configure_Entourage.xml)
- after encountering this problem, i uninstalled office and entourage
included and reinstalled with no luck.
- i tried moving all my 'user data' folder back to 'documents' but no
use there either.
- i have also rebuilt the database and got a clean bill of health from
the 'verification'.

BOTTOM LINE:
i'm stumped here. i printed out the debug data for this problem below
in case it helps anyone as i am not proficient in coding on the mac or
mac architecture.

any help would be appreciated.

greetings group. this is my first time posting a new post on this group
so i consider this to be pretty baffling as a problem. i usually am
able to troubleshoot most of my own software problems myself.

the problem:
- entourage (latest version - 2004 v11.3.2 - 061213)

That is not the latest version - 11.3.3 (061214) is now available.
starts and
connects to my MS exchange server-based mailbox with no problems.

- i had moved my MS user data files to another location (away from the
'documents' folder) based on a how-to i read online. i think i put it
in the library/application support folder as some other users had done
with no problems. i also checked later to see if this was ok to do and
found that there was a MS support article somewhere on microsoft.com
that said this could be done and i could move the 'user data' folder
anywhere AS LONG as i put an alias in its place in the 'documents'
folder. i went ahead and did that (more here:
http://www.microsoft.com/mac/resources/resources.aspx?pid=resourcekits&rk=offi
cex&article=/mac/officex/ork/Configure_Entourage.xml)
- after encountering this problem, i uninstalled office and entourage
included and reinstalled with no luck.
- i tried moving all my 'user data' folder back to 'documents' but no
use there either.
- i have also rebuilt the database and got a clean bill of health from
the 'verification'.

BOTTOM LINE:
i'm stumped here. i printed out the debug data for this problem below
in case it helps anyone as i am not proficient in coding on the mac or
mac architecture.

any help would be appreciated.

First step would be to try rebuilding the database in case it is being
caused by corruption being encountere dby the daemon.

Office vX:
Hold down the option key when starting Entourage and take the first option
('typical rebuild'). If this doesn¹t resolve the problems, then try an
ŒAdvanced Rebuild¹.

Office 2004:
You still call the rebuilder by holding down Option key at launch, but it
now brings up a separate app "Database Utility" (which could be launched by
double-clicking of you wish) that lives in the Office subfolder.

First of all, if you have any Office apps open, a dialog comes up that
offers to quit them.

Then you get a window with a list of your identities to select from, and
four options:

1) It has a new feature "Verify database integrity" option: this should
reduce unnecessary rebuilding. Apparently it's quite sensitive. And see 4)
below.

2) "Compact the database". (Like X's "Typical rebuild").

3) Rebuild the database. (Like X's "Advanced Rebuild")

4) "Set database preferences". Actually there's only one pref: you can turn
on "Verify database in background "which means "run automatically" and let
you know if your database needs rebuilding.

Try this for an off the wall solution. Insert you MacOSX install disk.
Find the "fonts folder" using <command> <F> or <find>, copy that" fonts
folder" to your dektop. Go to font book and create a new font set using
<+> in the bottom left corner. Select the new set and go to <add
fonts>, which is found in one of the pull down menus, (sorry, I'm using
a PC right now), Select the "fonts folder" which you copied to your
desktop. This will add the fonts to your system wich probably got
"buggered" during the Entourage or OS update. Let me know if it works.

i leave entourage on and go about my work and come back in about an
hour or so and find that i have an error window saying that "Entourage
Database Dameon has encountered an error and needs to close".

If the rebuild did not fix the problem....

Make sure you have only one daemon in your Startup Items (located in System
Preferences --> Accounts). If you see more than one Microsoft Database
daemon, delete them all and let Entourage recreate a new one.

Next step...

Either remove Entourage preferences to test for corruption or test in a new
User. ~/Library/Preferences/:

com.microsoft.OfficeNotifications.plist
com.microsoft.DatabaseDaemon.plist
com.microsoft.Entourage.plist
Microsoft/Entourage Preferences

Seemingly unrelated is an Apple OS update. You might need to download the
combo updater from Apple and run it again rather than using Software Update.
Doing so overwrites potentially problem-causing files. Several users have
reported this fixed some odd problems they were having with Entourage.

<http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/>

If all else fails...

Run "Remove Office" located in the Office 2004 --> Additional Tools folder"
then apply the updates in this order:

11.3.0. (This update includes all of the improvements released in all
previous Office 2004 updates.)

11.3.3 Update

I only have one and in fact saw your contribution regarding the same in

I just deleted the above files and will update on whether it had an
impact.

Is there a specific name or number for the mentioned Apple updater?

I had done this in the first couple of days I started having problems.
Very surprisingly it did not help that kept me wondering about what
else could be left.

A bit off topic: Entourage is a main reason I am considering upgrading
to an Intel Macbook Pro and running parallels to be able to run Outlook
XP for Windows alongside the rest of my well-behaved mac apps. I really
much prefer outlook and it server my needs very well.

Thanks again.

Mac OS X 10.4.8 Combo Update (PPC)

One thing that I don't believe was mentioned is to test in a new User.
Testing in a new User will quickly tell you if the problem is system wide or
if it's your User's folder that contains the problem.

Create a new User:

Choose Apple menu > System Preferences and click Accounts.
Click Add (+) and type the user's name.

I have a test user set up just for testing purposes. With "Fast User
Switching" it's easy to go back and forth.

I think you will be happy with Entourage when we get your problems fixed.

the above worked but how do i get my main user account fixed? i
removed office completely and reinstalled (i even removed all prefs)
but still no use. what's the culprit?

Did you trash or rename the preferences? I know that an application is not
supposed to find things when moved, but I have seen occasions where it was
reading from something in the trash.
but still no use. what's the culprit?

Did you check your startup items in System Preferences? There should be only
1 Microsoft Database daemon. If you have more than one, delete all and let
Entourage create a new one when it launches.

i could try deleting the trash after removing and before re-
installing. will let you know if that works.

also - could there be any loose files, temp folders, backups lying
around? how would i be able to do a truly clean sweep? i was thinking
of spotlighting 'entourage' and deleting anything that came up.

on a seemingly unrelated note: i keep getting 'opening application for
the first time' warnings quite frequently for applications where that
is not true. has anyone seen this on their mac too?

"Remove Office" is supposed to remove all Microsoft Office files including
the invisible ones. Run it several times for good measure.

Since you are having other problems, I suggest re-apply the combo updater
from Apple. Doing so overwrites potentially problem-causing files.

You might need to consider doing an Archive and Install of the OS.

thanks diane. but you did not mention what i should do with the USER
DATA files that, i believe, mainly stores my specific information
including emails and attachments. again - i do not mind trashing these
as all my data is on the exchange server and can be retrieved again.

i have this nagging feeling that something in those user data folders
may be corrupt and causing the entourage problems.

regarding the combo updated, i will give it a try but shouldn't the
problems have been also happening in the new user account if it was OS
related?

"Remove Office" does not remove your Microsoft User Data folder, but since
you have a backup I see no reason not to trash your current Identity.
HOWEVER, I would not recommend trashing until you are sure you can transfer
what you need back to your computer. Then trash it.

You can rename the Identity if the name presents a problem.
i have this nagging feeling that something in those user data folders
may be corrupt and causing the entourage problems.

Yes, but what about your other problems? Do the combo updater. It might not
fix everything, but it won't hurt and hopefully it will help with overall.
regarding the combo updated, i will give it a try but shouldn't the

related?

Yes. This points to your current user not just your Entourage Identity. You
might consider starting over with everything in a new User.

Just so we're clear....

A User is a term used by the Mac OS. The terms Identity and User are often
confused. Entourage stores your data in an Identity, and the Mac OS creates
Users. The Users folder resides at the root level of the startup disk and
contains the home folders for all user accounts on the computer.

thanks. your points are pretty lucid and i understand the difference
between user and identity.

on a related note - does anyone know of good mac tuneup type programs
that can be used to analyze and fix any OS problems and
inconsistencies?

I

OK - i finally seem to have resolved the problem even thought i
thought i had eliminated this as one of the culprits early in the
process. it seems my problem was that i had relocated the 'microsoft
user data' from the 'documents' folder to a different location on my
drive and used an alias to point there as directed by Microsoft KB
artible here -> http://support.microsoft.com/kb/268323 .

for some reason this seems to have been crashing my daemon on and on.
thinking about reasons, the only thing i can come up with is that
there may be different permission settings on my library folder where
i had moved the data to.

moving the data back to the original installed location has resolved
the entourage crash but the problem now is that i have the 'user data'
folder where i dont want it. i am using foldershare to sync across
computers and one of the folders i sync is 'documents' hence my reason
for removing unecessary folders from there (i use an exchange account
so my email syncs automatically with the server).

thanks for your help all - especially dianne. now i have created
another problem to solve :)

Your Library folder should have the same permissions as your Documents
folder. They are both inside the User's folder. Did you move it elsewhere?

My two cents... It might take a bit longer to copy over your Microsoft User
Data folder in the foldershare, but you will have a second copy of your
data. You can never have too many backups.

i recall having some problems recently with permissions since i
separated the computer's administrator account from my user account
for security and safety reasons. i keep getting asked for the
administrator password whenever i want to install files in
'applications' , etc.

would you know about an accessible tool that does this easily? some
utility maybe that can ease the permission process? i find there are
too many permission levels and user groups for a personal OSX
installation.

i thought the same thing actually but then, whenever the file changed
slightly as a result of exchange syncing, the huge database file may
be copied repeatedly throughout the day given its dynamic nature.

the other issue (and i just thought of this) is that two mac syncing
both their 'documents' folders would overlap possibly with their
database files if they both had entourage installed _and_ had the same
'identity' names (which i dont actually and lukily). this will cause
both identities to be synced in the same documents folder and
effectively duplicate most data. many things to consider but worth
thinking about.

thanks

You should be able to set your user back to have admin privileges in System
Preferences.

Just make sure in your zeal to backup that you are making more work and
problems for yourself. I don't quite understand your logic in making your
User's folder a non-admin account. Good luck on getting your problems fixed.

i have bad news. it seems that my problem did not go away after i set
my user level as 'administrator'. looks like i am back to step one.

any ideas would be helpful. the only solution - but not workable
really - is a new user account on my machine.
