Database daemon fatal error

Dear Diane (or to whom it may concern):

I've been having the "fatal error" problem and per your advice below I did the "quick test" and created a new identity to see if the error continued. It doesn't seem to be continuing, which is good, but I noticed that the new identity's database is about 40 MB less in size than that for the old identity (which I still have). What did I lose?

Thanks,
Kevin
------------------
When i open Entourage i get the message 'Database Daemon Fatal Error' and need
to shut it. I am using Microsoft Office 2008 for Mac.

This error probably means database corruption. I would recommend rebuilding
the database, but first do this quick test. Create a new blank Identity in
Entourage and see if the error occurs in the new Identity.

Make a copy of your Identity first in the Finder. Then rebuild.

How to rebuild:

Let me know if this works.

The database will be left with 'wasted' space in it every time you delete
something. However, this is not all bad, since the wasted space is used up
with new data as it is added. This way, over a period of time (assuming that
you are deleting stuff as you go) the database will probably reach an
optimum size, after which the stuff you delete is roughly equal to the stuff
you add, and no further growth takes place.

This happens during a rebuild too. Compacting will further reduce, but if
you look at the database as a partition, this is a good thing. Once your
database has reached it's size as established, the Finder will start writing
your data in bits around your drive. IMO, this could make your data more
susceptible to corruption.

Thank you, Diane. If the new identity continues to work w/o error, at what point, if ever, is it okay for me to delete and remove the old identity (which is around 450 MB in size)?

Thanks!
Kevin

I would give it a couple of weeks and delete. 450MB is very small BTW.
