Decoded text in Word Document after Recovery

After recovering some word documents that were deleted when I open them from
word 97 I'm not able to read them, I'm just getting unformatted text. I try
notepad, with no luck. I was wondering if there is a free utility that can
fix this, any suggestions are welcome.
