default template vs. normal template Word 2004

Just a quick comment -

All this is fine if you use one template most of the time -
I have about 4 that I use regularly. And a few others that I use less often.
(Project Gallery is fine for those last).

And I leave Normal alone to hold all the little customizations to shortcuts,
etc. That way they are available for all templates except when specifically
changed for that one template.

The only time I actually create a doc based on the Normal template is when I
need to jot something down in a hurry, or need to paste a bit of something
to (re)format a bit before printing.

Hi Phillip:

You left out a rather important step: Having made your changes, you need to
click "Default" before closing any of the dialogs. If you do not, the
changes will be written only to the open document, not to Normal template.

The best way to customise Normal is to use File>Open to open Normal Template
as a document. This puts you totally in control (not all options are
available, or will save, if you use the Default button).

You need to ensure that you have no other documents open anywhere when you
edit Normal template. That is because Word holds a copy of Normal Template
in memory for each open document. When you quit, the Normal template that
gets saved to disk is thee one attached to the last open document to close.

Hope this helps

I found a simple way to create a customized Normal template.

Open Word2004 to blank document create your formatting changes. Save the Blank
document right after making the changes. Now imediately quit Word.

Word will ask do you wish to formatting changes part of Normal? (something
similar?).

Choose Yes(okay). Let Word Quit.

Now reopen word and your formatting changes will be there.

Hi Neva:

Yeah. I use macro buttons on my toolbar for the three new kinds of
documents that I create most often. I rarely create a "valuable" document
from the Normal template.

You can record this macro using File>New. If you get stuck, give me a shout
and I will send you one.

Cheers

Hey John-
That's the solution that I use for most anything I can't find a built-in
check box or preference list for.

Handy things, macros.

Thanks,
Neva
