Deleting Resources from pool file

Hello,

Is there a way to delete or remove resources from a shared resource pool
file without corrupting it? I am running MS project 2003. When I try to use
the delete key on the row I want to remove, it seems to corrupt the file or
won't allow me to save the pool.

I need to remove resources which appear in the middle of the list (they are
no longer with the company).

We have one resource pool and pretty much use it constantly, linking it to a
Master project schedule with many projects in them.

Thanks any help would be appreciated.

Hi,

I think that when

a) you first delete the resources from the sharer files (if not they will
automatically reappear in the pool anyway)
b) You delete the resources in the pool with the sharer files open

Everything should be fine.

Jan, I have tried this multiple times, and it doesn't work.

Here are the steps:

1. highlight the row to delete
2. right-click, delete resource

the resource remains in the resource file. It is as if I have not even
completed the function.

I tried this another time with some additional resources being added to the
file and got error messages.

However, the added resources are appearing in the file, I just can't seem to
remove resources.

Any ideas?

Thanks.

Hi Tina,

I tried this just now in P2002 and it's even simpler, when pool and all
sharers are open, you delete the resource in either of the files, it's gone
from all of them.

So what's your problem? a few guesses:
- you don't run project Server do you?
- Maybe you didn't open all sharer files? In the pool, go to Tools, Share
resources and "Open all". Are there files that you do not recognize ? Then
"break link".

Jan,

Wanted to let you know I finally got this to work. I tried breaking the
links to the offending projects, but the links just were not breaking. They
would update and recognize the file again. What finally worked was this:

1. Go to the offending project that used to be included into the Master
project file, and change it to "use own resources" and to no longer use the
pool.
2. Open the master project file, including the resource file and then
deleting the link.
3. Use the update links command on the tools>resource>resource pool.
4. I also found it necessary to go into the resource file and view resource
usage. It appears that many blank tasks were assigned to the resource I was
trying to delete. When I deleted the tasks from there, the resource was
finally free and could be deleted.

Thanks again for all of your help!
