dial-up disconnect

I've recently tried to set up Outlook on a new Windows XP account with the
same settings as my old account. I haven't been successful in finding the
control that allows my dial-up connection to stay connected until I close
Outlook (or choose to manually disconnect). Currently the new account
disconnects automatically after a "send/receive" process. The goal is to
connect when "send/receive" is initiated and stay connected. Does anyone
know where I can find this control?

Thanks in advance,

Mark

I'd set Outlook to use a LAN connection then set Windows to automatically
dial when an Internet connection is needed.

I tried your idea.
Setting Outlook to "Connect using LAN" and "Connect via modem when Outlook
is offline"....also Windows connection is set to: "dial whenever network
connection is not present". The result is Outlook won't dial the connection
and consequently can't find the mail server.

I wouldn't check the box about using a modem when Outlook is offline. I've
used the LAN setting for years with Windows managing dialup. It hasn't
failed much in that time.

How long is the connect taking? I wonder if you need to bump up the server
timeouts to account for dialing/connect time

I don't know for sure on the time. It's as it always has been for any
application that requires the internet. Windows calls for the dial-up
process to my local provider. It seems to be connected in half a minute or
so. Explorer just opens the requested page and waits with connection open
until the next page is requested. I don't have a time-out set on the
connection to disconnect if left unattended. Outlook, on the other hand,
connects in the same way, but immediately disconnects when the last message
has been delivered.
