Disable "requesting virus scan"

I had Norton and it's lapsed and I'm now using another program.
Norton used to scan all of Word files before opening.

I took Norton out of my start up process and don't even open it BUT when I
went to print some documents,it's now causing Word to be VERY slow - slow
opening, slow trying to find a file, etc. I'm talking maybe 20 minutes or so
to just open and then 10 minutes to find a file. SO, to speed things up, I
opened Norton when I was working in Word and everything goes along just fine
now.

My question: Is there anyway to disable the "requesting virus scan" when
trying to open a document? I wasn't sure if the setting were in Norton or in
Word.

THANK YOU.

Forgot to say, I have Word 2000 and program now using for virus protection
in AVG. That I know of, it only scans email (?), so might HAVE to get Norton
again.

no, I haven't uninstalled it. I just removed it from my start-up.
I also didn't open it, UNTIL I realized I thought that's what was causing
Word to lag.
I kept seeing the "requesting virus scan" and thought...hmmm..wonder if it's
trying to find Norton????" and I think it was partially right. Once I opened
it, everything started moving along at normal speed.

Put it back in Startup and restart the computer. Go into NAV Advanced
options and disable the Office Plug-in option. Then restart your computer
again. Test that this has worked by opening and testing Word again. Now you
can uninstall or disable NAV.

Thanks Terry, I'll try that when I get time. I just became a GRANDMA for the
first time on Thursday, so I've put my 'puter on the back burner for a few
days :)
