disk full error

ok, so for some odd reason, when I tell publisher (2003) to save my
publication, it gives me the following error: "The disk is full trying to
write (filename). Save this file on a different disk and/or drive." it has
never done this before and I've created similar (much larger) documents for
three years in a row. currently, my file is only 374 MB, and I'm saving to
an external hard drive with 125 GB free. it saves just fine if I save it to
my PC's hard drive, then copy it over, but that's getting really annoying!
I would prefer to save it directly to my external drive not only for
convenience sake, but also to not take up space on my internal drive.

Any ideas what's causing it to do this? Can it be fixed?

Never, never, never save a file directly to removable media. Never, never,
never open a file directly from removable media.

Besides issues like yours, bad computing habits like that have caused files
to be corrupt. Do yourself a favor - take the few extra moments it takes to
save it to your hard drive then copy it over.

Publisher is recognizing your external drive as removable media. What
happens if you make the drive the default save destination in Publisher's
options? If you still get the error I'm afraid you are stuck with copying.
At least you have a backup.

I have been saving the same project files like this for three years straight
with zero issues. Why would it all of a sudden decide that it won't save
right?? And, my files get to be sooooo huge by the end of the project that
it slows down my computer if I save to my PC (as in, it took like 20+ minutes
to finish saving...not so efficient when you're trying to get a project done!)

I disagree. I have an external hard drive, it is treated just exactly as if
it were internal. I save to it frequently without issue. I don't save Office
files but I do save my Corel files and many other application files. It is
the very reason why I bought the drive.

Hi Mary,

You are certainly more experienced with Publisher
than I am but wouldn't an external USB hard drive
be recognized as a Removable Disk just like a
flash drive or memory card?

All I know is we have seen many issues reported
that were caused by saving to drives other than
the system drive.

John are you suggesting it is dangerous? to save project files to
other than the system disk. That would suggest MSFT have a monumental
disconnect someplace. I from bitter experience never ever put my data
anywhere near the system, because when the system falls over (note
WHEN not if) I loose all my data!

Maybe I should have worded it differently...saving
to the local hard drive is the best (safest) practice.

Best bet IMHO...save to / open from...local hard
drive...copy to external drive or network.
