Additionally, there are a few things that will move your question to the top
of the list for those that get answered.
1. Include the Office version that you are using. There are currently 5
versions that are often inquired about (95 through 2003). Some features are
only available to certain versions but don't make us guess. I makes us move
along to another question.
2. Use a descriptive subject - "Please Help!" will likely be skipped by the
regulars. "Word 2002 formatting causes document corruption" will probably
get a look by the Word experts here.
3. Include the EXACT text of any error message that you get - they often
contain the information needed to search the Microsoft Knowledge Base
Library (Where YOU should have already looked.)
4. Include the steps you took to create the error. It helps if the error
can be recreated by you before you post to the public news groups.
5. Include a list of any recently installed or uninstalled programs that
may have affected your program. Include any add-ins, 3rd party products,
and "stuff I just tried but didn't like."
6. Tell us if you are using an anti-virus program or Norton Utilities
(especially their firewall product.)
7. Less information is not necessarily a good thing, but a 2 page post is
going to be skipped by a lot of people (me included, I do have a real life)
who all volunteer their time in these groups.
8. Please do not ask for a personal reply - it is offputting to folks who
see this as a PUBLIC service, not a private help line. Questions asked in
the public groups are answered in the public groups, so that others with the
same or similar problem can benefit from the answer supplied. Private
answers serve no one.
9. Please research the group where you want to post your question via
google.groups.com or another source to see if your question has been asked
and answered. There are some folks who will *kindly* point you to google
for the answer that has been posted 17,592 times, and will be happy to keep
you up to date with the number of times it has been answered, with a pointer
to google.groups.com.
10. Last but not least, do no feel shy about thanking the person who
provided the answer, especially if it is something that you had to have
answered for mission critical purposes, was causing massive hair loss, or
otherwise made your life unbearable without the answer. We do like to know
if something helped and thanks are a nice counterpoint to the nasties that
we all see here on occasion.
And THAT is how to get your question answered. There, I feel much better
now.
Oh, and what Bob said, click on the + sign to see answers.
