downloading workspace problems

Jonathan Garcia

I recently had a hard drive fail and lost all my data, but luckily i synched
all my important files to groove. I'm trying to download my workspace from
my groove account, but when I click download nothing happens. I disabled
the firewall but I didn't know which ports to open on my router if I needed
to or not. I don't know what else to try.

Jonathan,

Sorry to come with bad news but Account backup does not contains any
workspace content...

Your account backup contains your digital identity (certificates), the list
of the workspace you created or are member of, your role in each workspace
and finally the list of your Groove contacts.
When you have a disk failure, you can use your Account Backup to restore
your identity but to get workspaces back you have to:
- get each workspace from other workspaces members,
- restaure workspaces from archives previously created by using a manual
"archive workspace" action or by using a third party backup tool or finally
by using a Backup Service (provided by the Groove DataBridge Server)

Fabrice,

Just to make sure I understood correctly, when I synced files from my hard
drive(which is now gone), I didn't actually transfer the files onto a
workspace, simply the file location on my hard drive? I guess in other words,
if I was able to download that workspace, would I be able to open any of the
files, or since their original location is gone, will the files be corrupt
now? Thanks.

Jonathan -

If there was anyone else in those workspaces, then you can get the workspace
content from them. If you were the only member of the workspace, then your
data is gone.

What do you mean by "when I synched files"? HOW did you synchronize files?

If you were the only member of the workspace AND had the workspace only on
the computer that failed, then yes, your data is gone.

If you had the same Groove account on two computers and the workspace was
synchronizing on BOTH computers, then you should be able to do this:

1. Reinstall Groove on the computer that had the failure.
2. Create a fresh copy of your Groove account on the other computer.
3. Import your Groove account on the computer that had the failure.
4. From the computer that had the failure, fetch the workspace from the
other computer.

Both computers must be online at the same time, and you must be logged into
Groove on both. More specifics are here: "How to use Groove on multiple
computers
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;907326"

If by synching files, you meant that you created a disk backup, this article
may apply: "Groove does not work correctly after you restore an old binary
snapshot of the hard disk drive"

In either case, you may want to review this: "How to back up accounts and
workspaces in Groove"
