DSN, Project 2000 and Project Server 2002

I have finally managed to get Project Server 2002 installed along with
SharePoint Services and what not. I had the project manager upload a project
plan. Now he cannot access it!

He is using Project 2000 and we found some KB articles that talk about
setting up DSNs on the client box and the server box and so on.

I set all these up and checked but cannot seem to get the DSN to show in the
show DSN section of the views under the admin section of the Project Server
website.

Does anyone out there have any ideas?

Thank you in advance,

Rohan

Where are you storing the project plan?

Let me start by confessing to be a complete newbie at this ....

I'm not sure I understand completely .... we are storing the project plan in
the database ... is that not what project server does?

If you mean as far as the local project file, it would be on the client
machine - on the project manager's laptop.

Hope that is enough info for you to help me. :)

Thanks,

Rohan

Rohan:

Fist of all, if you're using Project 2000 with Project Server, you can't use
enterprise features. In this case you should create a database for plan
storage that is separate from your Project Server database. The plans must
be stored somewhere that Project Server can see them and you must maintain
DSNs in order from Project Server to access them.

This conversation should be moved to
microsoft.public.project.standard_and_server

A database for plan storage - but where would I get the schema for this
database?

Is there any document/white paper/kb article that you can point me to that I
can get this information from?

Thanks again,

Rohan

Are you SQL server or MSDE?

Rohan:

Then all you have to do is create an empty database to store the plans. The
tables get created when you save a project to it. Some people will store
these in the Project Server database, but I don't recommend this. If you
were using Project Pro, then that's where they get saved automatically. Even
if you do this, Project Server won't be able to access them until you create
a DSN for them.

I did this and the tables have been created and so on.

I also have a DSN on my machine pointing to that database, a DSN on the
ProjectServer machine pointing to that database. I even tried putting one on
the database machine pointing to the database. They all are named the same,
have the same user-names and passwords.

I still cannot get the DSN to show up under the view DSN section in the
Project Server website.

Help!

Thanks,

Rohan

Have you tried publishing the project?

I spoke with the PM and he states that as far as he knows the only method
for publishing a project is to upload it to the database.

Is there anything else that needs to be done in order to publish a project?

Thanks again,

Rohan

Rohan:

Once you save it to the database, go to the Tools menu and select Publish...
(It's been so long since I've used Project 2000!) Once you have published
the plan, the DSN should show up under manage DSNs.

Gary,

There is no option to Publish under the Tools menu. Is that not a Project
2002 function?

Is there any other way to publish the plan?

Thanks again,

Rohan

Rohan:

Tools > Workgroup > TeamAssign

You may need to set the workgroup options under Tools > Options > Workgroup
tab first.

It has been a long time since I've used Project 2000 and I've never used it
with Project Server 2002.

Thank you for all your help Gary.

Unfortunately, the PM decided that it was too much trouble and decided to
start using MS Project 2002 instead!!!! One of these days ....
