Duration

Hello,

If a PM entered some of his duration as both days and some in hours- would
this have an impact on the finish variance (which does not seem to
calculating correctly). Also, for the tasks that were entered in hours, they
roll up to a Summary task that uses by day. The hours are to the minute,
like 13.76 (I doubt that the PM was that specific). Any ideas as to what
might be happening here?

Thanks in advance.

Laureen,
All time data in Project is stored in minutes, actually to the nearest
tenth of a minute. What you see in the Duration field is determined by
the setting under Tools/Options/Schedule tab, "Duration is entered in".
That setting is the default and will be used for all durations,
including the summary line, but you can enter duration for subtasks in
any time dimension you want (i.e. minutes, hours, days, etc.).

Remember that the duration of a summary line is the working time between
the start of the earliest subtask under the summary to the finish of the
latest subtask under the summary. To find out exactly why the summary
line is showing decimal days, try including the time in the Start and
Finish fields (Tools/Options/View tab). Look for subtasks that do not
start at 8:00 am or finish at 5:00 pm.

Hope this helps.

Welcome to this Microsoft Project newsgroup :)

Odd timings are often canused by a mis-match between calendars and
definition of times. You might like to see FAQ Item: 5. Default Working
