EASY HELP: Tasks are not changing according to predecessor's date

E

ETNPNYS

I apologize up front; I am new to Project, so my questions will hopefully be
ridiculously easy to answer.

I am using Project 2003 Standard. Here is the problem I am experiencing:
1. Create a task [Development] with a Mon-Tues timeline
2. Create a task [Testing] with a Wed-Fri timeline
3. Make Task1 an FS predecessor of Task2
4. Change Task1 so that it ends on Wed
Result: Task2 is STAYING with a start date of Wed, even though its
predecessor has not ended yet!
Expected: Task2 to automatically adjust to start on Thurs and end on Mon

Am I missing something?

New users are the best kind, welcome aboard ETNPYS.
I think it was your Step 2 that was the problem. Make sure you only key in
Durations, not dates. Let Project do that work for you. If you did not key
a date, you would see Testing starting on Monday and continuing for 3 days.
It would shift to W/T/F when you established Development as the predecessor.

Reminders --- keyed in dates create constraints such as "Start No Earlier
Than" and these must be avoided if at all possible.

Step 4 --- you would change this end date by increasing the duration one
day, not keying a date.

Other things to check: Is Calculation Mode set to Automatic?
(Tools/Options/Calculations tab) select Automatic.

Set the project start date properly -- Project/Project Information.

In the link below there will be another link called Mike's Tutorials. Mike
Glenn is a Microsft Project Most Valuable Professional (MVP) and the
tutorials are informative and easy to follow. Give them a try.

Press F9 to recalculate the project.

Wow. I knew it was going to be something stupid. The automatic calculation
was off. (It's not my computer, for the record!)

I appreciate the help!
