Emailing .xlxs to PC coming through as .dat?!

Version: 2008 Operating System: Mac OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard) Processor: Intel I have created a file in excel for mac and saved it as the default format so that is not the issue.. but when I go to the built in mail client on the mac ''mail'' make a new email click attach then browse to the file it sends fine from my end but when the person receives the email it comes through and it labeled what I called it but the file extension is '.dat'. I have tried to resend but to no avail - same error on their end...

I am using hotmail and the person that I am trying to email is using Outlook 2007.

I am a new mac user so I hope that this is my fault and easily fixed. BUT the main selling point is COMPATIBILITY... Please help this is really important - to patch it I am sending as a PDF but that is so inefficient.

Please email me ASAP: (e-mail address removed)

I attached a xlxs file and emailed it from a mac machine and opened within outlook on a pc machine - no problems. On the Mac, my default mail client is "Mail" and I used the email icon on the standard toolbar, without going into the mail/attach route. The only difference isb I am using OSX 10.5

Make sure you use the checkbox in Save As to "Append file extension" & the
Mail is set to send "Windows-Friendly" attachments [Edit> Attachments].

Since the attachment is being subjected to the 2 most potentially damaging
handlers ‹ a webmail server on one end & Exchange on the other ‹ I'd also
suggest that you get in the habit of sending zipped attachments.

Thank you so much for the help. I had the 'Append File Extension' unchecked. But I still don't understand the function of the 'Append File Extension'.

You answered at 3:46 am?! Wow, talk about proactive:)

BUT I do have one suggestion PLEASE MAKE WINDOWS LIVE WRITER FOR MAC! I need it so bad!

Among other functionality, filename extensions identify the file types to
the respective operating systems so they can be 'passed' to the proper
applications & correctly handled. Because of today's security issues some
email servers append an arbitrary extension if attachment doesn't have one.

That's 3:46 am *your* time :) I was sound asleep at that time here.

That suggestion won't do much good here since you aren't communicating with
anyone from Microsoft... were just 'civilians' who volunteer our time to
help out where we can. If you want to comment on any given product usr the
Help menu> Send Feedback command in that. For other suggestions or requestsm
one option is the Product Suggestions page of the Mactopia web site:
