Entourage message saying Exchange password wrong, but it is not!

Hi all,

I am repeatedly receiving a message from Entourage stating, "Mail
could not be received at this time. The server for account <account
name> returned the error "Logon failure: unknown user name or bad
password." Your username/password or security settings may be
incorrect. Would you like to try re-entering your password?"

Oddly, while the dialog box with this message is being displayed,
Entourage is downloading new mail in the background. If I answer "Yes"
and re-enter the (correct) password, then I simply get this dialog box
again. If I answer "No" then I am disconnected from the server (i.e.,
it stops downloading new mail in the background).

I have tried deleting and re-creating this Exchange account in
Entourage. Sometimes this buys me a week of normal operations,
sometime it doesn't work at all and I simply get the same error
messages with the new account.

I wrote to Microsoft Support with this problem. I was informed that
they had no solution. The recommendation was to delete the account and
recreate a new one (see above). I was also directed to contact
"Professional Support" for additional help. Presumably there's charge
for that level of support (it appears the Amateur Support is free). I
would gladly pay someone to provide me with a fix once and for all to
this problem, but the person at MS didn't make it clear that
Professional Support had any better advice for me than his.

Does anyone out there have a real fix for this problem?

Thanks in advance,
Danny

P.S.: If it wasn't for Microsoft Entourage fighting with Microsoft
Exchange Server, my life with a Mac would be very pleasant. :(

Hi Danny!

You haven't provided your Exchange Server version nor your Entourage
version. Are you fully up-to-date on both?

This problem sounds like the one described in an older blog post of mine
here
<http://blog.entourage.mvps.org/2007/05/exchange_server_hotfix_resolve.html>.

Hope this helps!

Hello Danny,

This is because Entourage stores your password in the Mac OS keychain,
if the Mac OS keychain is damaged it will state that your username
and or password is correct, then you would have to repair your Mac OS
keychain. Only do this if you are able to sign into your Exchange
account by browsing the Exchange web site.

Hi Darlene,

Thanks for yur note.

I have looked at my Keychain entries and I see nothing listed for
Exchange. I have run Repair on the keychain it it tells me all is OK.
What should I be looking for?

Thanks,
Danny

Hi Bill,

Thanks for your note. I am running Entourage 2004 and the Exchange
Server is 2003. I will forward your HotFix ink to our SysAdmins, but
they tell e they won't run anything except official Service Packages.

Thanks,
Danny

It's possible that your password is be expired. Unfortunately, the only way
the red-headed-stepchildren that are Mac clients can change their password
in Exchangeland is to do it from within the Outlook Web Access interface
(Options->Passord->Change Password). Of course, you'll need your Exchange
administrator to reset your password as you probably cannot login to OWA at
the moment.

We just got online with our Exchange server and this is exactly what
happened to me over the weekend. I received no warning from Entourage. I and
several other of my Mac cohorts were locked out of email until mid-Monday
morning.

Please work better with Exchange Entourage 2008... Please work better with

Hi Christopher,

Thanks for your note. I think that the password is still OK as it
works when I use webmail access for Outlook.

Let me join you in our collective wishes: Please work better with

Sounds like a keychain issue. go to account settings, edit and make
sure the "save password" is not checked
