Error creating .ps file with Publisher 2003

I am trying to create an Adobe PDF file with the PDFx-1a:2001 standard in
order to send a book to a commercial printer. I usually do this by doing a
Save As to a .ps file and then using Adobe Acrobat Distiller to create the
PDF file.

I am consistently getting an error when I try to do the save which says
Publisher can not save the file. When I look in my document folder there
will be a small sized .ps file (ex. 427 KB). If I run distiller on that .ps
file I get one page of my document with no way to control which page I get.

The file size of the book is huge (99,669KB) and contains 25 large TIF
formatted graphics. I did try to increase my virtual memory thinking that it
might be a memory issue. I have set my "Total paging file size for all
drives" to 100000MB with no change in outcome.

I have tried breaking my book into smaller sections. My first five pages
consist of limited text only (no pictures). When I checked the file size of
this section, it is 74,676KB. I do not understand why that would be, but
there you have it. Attempts to save this portion as a .ps file produced the
same results as listed above.

I appreciate your help in resolving this issue.

The first error message I get is:

"Publisher cannot print the high-resolution version of this graphic. To
continue printing using low-resolution version of this graphic, click OK. To
stop printing now, click cancel."

If I press OK for the three times it gives me this error message and wait a
long time (about 2 hours) for it to process something, then I get:

"Publisher cannot continue printing due to an error. Press F1 for further
information."

When I press F1, nothing happens.

I checked the Acrobat Distiller configuration. It matches the settings in
the referenced document.

I tried to download the Publisher 2003 post-Service pack 2 hotfix package,
but could not find it at either the Publisher or Office 2003 download sites.
I searched using the name, the fix number given in the description, and the
date of the release.

I appreciate your help Mary.

What version Acrobat do you have? What is the resolution of the images? Have you
tried printing to the Imagesetter?

Print, select the Imagesetter (any postscript printer driver), check "print to
file" save as (your file's name).ps (extension ps is important). Open Acrobat
Distiller, browse to your new file.

I have Acrobat 7.0 Professional. The resolution of the images - the files
range in size from about 30 MB to just over 70MB. They were scanned at
300dpi.

I tried printing using a HP Color LaserJet 4600 PS. I got this error
message: "Publisher cannot print the high-resolution version of this
graphic. To
continue printing using low-resolution version of this graphic, click OK. To
stop printing now, click cancel." I got it three times and clicked OK each
time.

After it finished processing and I distilled it, I received first page out
of my 52 page book, one blank page and nothing else.

I really appreciate the time you are spending on this!

Publisher has a known problem of not being able to save a large page range
to .ps. I believe the limit is 500mb. Print a page range, perhaps 1-10 to
.ps. Distill the multiple ranges to pdf and use Acrobat to combine to a
single file.

I thought the limit was 2GB, and that it was fixed in a Service Pack.

Thanks so much for all the ideas in this thread. I have been working my way
through them to get to a solution. Here's what I found.

I downloaded Service Pack 3 for Microsoft Office in the hope that it would
fix the problem. I still couldn't get a .ps file out of Publisher but that
download did lead me to a fix of the first error message I was getting about
not being able to print a high-resolution graphic. After the Service Pack
download, I got a different error message that talked about the graphic
converter. A little research on that and I discovered I had to re-load MS
Office to correct this situation.

Then I tried various experiments. I found that I could get a .ps file if my
file size was under 500 MB like "pdan" said, so I am now re-working the book
into smaller segments that fit this file size requirement and will rejoin
them once they are in .pdf format.

Again, thanks so much for all your ideas. Sorry, it took me so long to get
through all of your suggestions. I am something of a neophyte when it comes
to fixing computer glitches. I really appreciate the help.
